Worked Example
Connecting two floors with a 3 m rise and a 4 m run, and aiming for 17 cm risers, gives 18 risers (3 m ÷ 0.17 m rounds up). That means 17 treads. The actual riser height becomes 0.167 m and each tread works out to 0.235 m. The stringer, the diagonal beam supporting the steps, is exactly 5 m long (√(3² + 4²)) at a 36.87° incline — a classic 3-4-5 triangle.
Tips and Common Mistakes
- •Keep riser heights identical within 5 mm — the single biggest safety factor for stairs.
- •Add a handrail on at least one side, and on both sides for outdoor stairs or homes with elderly residents.
- •Check the headroom above the stair opening — allow at least 2 m from tread to ceiling.
- ✗Do not let the stringer length double as the material list — you still need treads, risers, balusters and a railing.
- ✗Do not squeeze treads below 22 cm; short treads cause foot slips, especially when descending with loads.

How do I calculate the number of steps?
Divide the total rise (floor-to-floor height) by the preferred riser height and round up. A 2.75 m floor height with 18 cm risers needs 16 risers, giving 15 treads. All risers must be uniform — vary by at most 5 mm.
What are comfortable riser and tread sizes?
Indoor stairs in India typically use risers of 15–18 cm with treads of 25–30 cm. A good rule is riser + tread ≈ 43–45 cm. Steeper outdoor and service stairs use taller risers and narrower treads.
How long should my staircase opening be?
The horizontal span (run) must accommodate the treads. With 15 treads at 28 cm each you need about 4.2 m of run. This calculator returns the actual tread depth for the run you have available.
What is a stringer?
The stringer is the inclined side beam that supports the treads. Its length is the diagonal of the rise and run: for a 2.75 m rise with a 3.6 m run it measures about 4.53 m, at a 37° angle.
Why must riser heights be uniform?
Uneven risers cause trips, especially when descending. Building codes require consecutive risers to differ by no more than about 5 mm. Always round the riser count up so every step gets the same height.
