CDs are time deposits common in the US; the Indian equivalent is a bank fixed deposit. Interest is taxable at your slab rate — senior citizens get an extra FD rate in India, which this estimate does not model.

How We Calculate
This calculator uses standard financial formulas verified by our team. All calculations are performed instantly in your browser using JavaScript — no data is sent to any server.
We use RBI-approved formulas and regularly updated bank rates. All rates and standards are sourced from official government and regulatory websites.
When to Use This Calculator
Use this calculator when comparing fixed-income options for the conservative slice of your portfolio: bank FDs, company deposits, and post-office term deposits. Because it reports both the maturity value and the effective annual yield, it lets you compare offers with different compounding frequencies on a fair basis — a 6.5% quarterly-compounding FD beats a 6.5% yearly-compounding one, and the APY card makes that visible. For India-based savers it is also a useful check before locking money: test a couple of tenors and rates, and confirm the maturity value against your goal for that money. Remember the interest is taxable at your slab rate and banks deduct TDS above the exemption threshold, so the maturity value is pre-tax. Keep the term matched to when you will actually need the funds.
How to Use This Calculator
- Step 1: Enter the amount you are depositing in the certificate of deposit or Indian fixed deposit.
- Step 2: Set the nominal annual interest rate offered by the bank.
- Step 3: Enter the term in years and choose the compounding frequency — quarterly is standard for Indian FDs.
- Step 4: Read the maturity value, interest earned, and the effective annual yield (APY).
Worked Example
Rohit deposits ₹1,00,000 in a 5-year fixed deposit at 6.5% per year, compounded quarterly. The maturity value comes to about ₹1,38,042, with ₹38,042 of interest. The effective annual yield is 6.66% — slightly above the nominal 6.5% because quarterly compounding earns interest on interest within each year. A 3-year monthly-compounded deposit of ₹5,00,000 at 7.1% reaches about ₹6,18,304, which shows how both the tenor and the compounding frequency shape the final amount.
Tips and Common Mistakes
- •Ask for the senior-citizen rate if applicable — Indian banks typically pay 0.5% more on FDs.
- •Use an FD ladder (1, 2 and 3-year tenors) so a portion matures each year and keeps you liquid.
- •Check whether the bank compounds quarterly or monthly before comparing two quotes — the effective yield differs.
- ✗Avoid breaking the FD early for small expenses — premature withdrawal penalties eat the interest advantage.
- ✗Avoid keeping more than ₹5 lakh in one bank if deposit insurance matters to you; the DICGC covers ₹5 lakh per bank per depositor.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a CD and what is its Indian equivalent?
A Certificate of Deposit is a fixed-term bank deposit in the US; the Indian equivalent is a fixed deposit (FD) with a bank. Both lock your money for a term at a fixed rate, and both are covered by deposit insurance up to a limit — US$250,000 in the US and ₹5 lakh per bank per depositor in India.
Why is the APY higher than the nominal rate?
Because of compounding. A 6.5% p.a. CD compounding quarterly has an effective annual yield of 6.66% — the extra 0.16% is interest earned on interest within the year. More frequent compounding gives a slightly higher APY at the same nominal rate.
What happens if I withdraw before maturity?
Banks typically charge a penalty for premature withdrawal — often 0.5–1% of the rate — and some FDs pay simple interest if broken within the first quarter. Senior citizens in India also get a higher FD rate (usually 0.5% more), which this calculator does not model.
Is the interest taxable?
Yes — FD/CD interest is fully taxable at your slab rate, and banks deduct TDS if the interest exceeds ₹40,000 in a year (₹50,000 for senior citizens). If your total income is below the taxable limit, you can file Form 15G/15H to avoid TDS.
Should I pick longer or shorter tenors?
Longer tenors lock today's rate but reduce liquidity. A common laddering strategy splits money across 1, 2 and 3-year FDs so a portion matures each year. Use the calculator to compare maturity values at each tenor before choosing.
