Worked Example
A golfer shooting 90, 94, 92, 98, 100 and 96 on a course rated 72 with slope 113 gets differentials of 18, 22, 20, 26, 28 and 24. With six rounds, the single best differential (18) is used, and 18 × 0.96 gives a handicap index of 17.28. With four rounds of 92, 88, 95 and 90 on a 72/118 course, the best differential of 15.32 produces an index of 14.71 — a stronger player by about three strokes.

What is a golf handicap index?
It is a number that measures your playing ability so players of different levels can compete fairly — lower is better. Each score is converted to a differential using the course rating and slope, the best ones are averaged, and the average is multiplied by 0.96.
How many scores do I need?
At least 3, but more rounds make the index more accurate. With 4 scores only the best (lowest) differential counts; with 8 rounds the best 2 count, and with 20 the best 8 count.
What are course rating and slope?
Course rating is the expected score for a scratch golfer (e.g. 72 on a par-72 course). Slope measures relative difficulty for higher handicaps, with 113 as the standard baseline. You'll find both on the scorecard.
How do I calculate a differential?
Differential = (score − course rating) × 113 ÷ slope. Shooting 92 on a course rated 72 with slope 118 gives a differential of (92−72) × 113 ÷ 118 = 19.15.
Can I play in tournaments with this index?
