Worked Example

A Delhi Metro train accelerates from rest to 72 km/h, which is 20 m/s, in 20 seconds. Enter final velocity 20, initial velocity 0 and time 20. The acceleration works out to (20 − 0) ÷ 20 = 1 m/s², and the train covers 0 × 20 + ½ × 1 × 20² = 200 metres while picking up speed. If the same train brakes from 20 m/s to 0 in 10 seconds, the result is −2 m/s², showing it is slowing down over a 100 metre stopping distance.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Tip 1: Convert km/h to m/s by dividing by 3.6 — 72 km/h is exactly 20 m/s.
  • Tip 2: For braking problems, enter the higher speed as the initial velocity so the acceleration shows as negative.
  • Tip 3: Time must be positive; a zero or negative time means no valid acceleration exists.
  • Mistake 1: Entering velocity in km/h while expecting an m/s² answer — keep all speeds in m/s.
  • Mistake 2: Using the final velocity twice or swapping the two speeds, which reverses the direction of the result.

How is acceleration calculated?

Acceleration = (final velocity − initial velocity) ÷ time. If a vehicle goes from 0 to 20 m/s in 5 seconds, the acceleration is (20 − 0) ÷ 5 = 4 m/s².

What does a negative acceleration mean?

A negative value means the object is slowing down, also called deceleration or retardation. Braking from 20 m/s to 0 in 5 seconds gives an acceleration of −4 m/s².
