When to Use This Calculator
Before exams, students want to know what a score is worth and, more urgently, what they need on the final to reach a target. This calculator converts a percentage or score into a letter grade and also works out the required score on a remaining exam given current marks and weights. A Class 10 student aiming for 90% overall after scoring 82% on the first two of five papers can see exactly what the last papers need to average. Teachers use it to set grade boundaries consistently, and parents use it to plan realistically for board exams. The grade bands follow the standard Indian system, and the page notes that different boards define boundaries slightly differently. Running several what-if scenarios — best case, likely case, worst case — turns anxiety into a concrete target score to study toward.
How to Use This Calculator
- Step 1: Enter your current grade as a percentage in the first field.
- Step 2: Enter the weight of the final exam as a percentage of the total course grade.
- Step 3: Enter the target grade you want for the course.
- Step 4: Read the minimum score needed on the final, and note whether it exceeds 100, which means the target is out of reach.
Worked Example
A student in Patna has a current grade of 70% after assignments, and the final exam is worth 50% of the course total. The target is 80% for the course. The calculator finds the needed score by dividing the gap by the weight of the final: the current portion is 0.70 times 0.50, or 0.35, so the remaining gap is 0.80 minus 0.35, or 0.45. Dividing 0.45 by 0.50 gives 0.90, so the student needs 90% on the final to finish at 80%. The same logic works for any weights that sum to 100.
Tips and Common Mistakes
- •Tip 1: All component weights must sum to 100%; if they do not, the required final score is not meaningful.
- •Tip 2: If the required score comes out above 100, the target is impossible, so try lower targets to see what is achievable.
- •Tip 3: Enter grades as whole percentages such as 70 for 70%, not as decimals or as points out of a different total.
- ✗Mistake 1: Entering the weight of the final as a decimal like 0.5 when the calculator expects 50.
- ✗Mistake 2: Ignoring the existing coursework weight; a 50% final cannot single-handedly lift a 40% average to 90%.
Frequently Asked Questions
What score do I need on my final exam?
The calculator divides the gap between your target and your current coursework contribution by the weight of the final. With a 70% current grade, a final worth 50% and an 80% target, you need exactly 90% on the final.
What does the weight of the final mean?
It is the share of the total course grade that the final exam carries, commonly 20% to 50%. CBSE and state boards often split internal assessment and theory, such as 30% and 70%, and the tool works with any weights that sum to 100%.
What if the required score comes out above 100?
Then the target is out of reach. With a 68% current grade, a final worth 30% and an 85% target, the calculation returns about 125%, which is impossible, so try a lower target to see what is achievable.
What is the passing mark in CBSE?
CBSE requires at least 33% in each subject and 33% overall to pass Class 10 and 12. State boards have similar cutoffs that can differ slightly, so check your own board's rules before relying on any percentage.
Can I use this for a course where the final is worth everything?
Yes. Set the final's weight to 100 and the current grade to 0, and the required score equals your target directly — useful for subjects assessed by a single exam.
